about
The latest Single off Charlie Needs Braces Debut Album is called ‘Daryung’ meaning ‘stingray’ in her mob of the Central Coast the GuriNgai’s language.
The Daryung is the mobs totem and their ancestor Bungaree was known for always throwing the Daryung back in the water when fishing, as it was his role to protect and tend to the waters.
The GuriNgai are saltwater people and the Daryung is of great importance as it represents the traditional peoples and carries their stories down through generations.
The spirits and ancestors live on through the Daryung, and Charlie feels a great sense of pride when she sings this song. She believes that through celebrating our culture and sharing our ancestors stories we can continue our cultural journey and solidify our identity as First Peoples.
Charlie Woods on Vocals, Trumpet, and Loops, Miri Woods on backing vocals, Arthur Day on Yikadi, Michael Saxall on Percussion.
Produced by Mr.Kapow and Charlie Woods, recorded and mixed by Mr.Kapow, Mastered by Guy Louis Faletolu, and supported by Creative Victoria.
The Daryung track was recorded in Naarm on Wurundjeri Country, and the video clip was filmed and performed on the land of the Boonwurrung people.
Charlie Needs Braces would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners, and pay respect to all past present and emerging First Peoples and their ongoing living cultures.
lyrics
Sunlight hits the water warming up those dark and empty places.
Your reflection hits the water and you see you've gone and got all dark and murky.
And you wanna feel free, to flap around, and feel the heart beat, and you wanna swim out there, breath in, breath out.
Like the Daryung
Like the Daryung
Sunlight hits the water warming up those dark and empty places you've been.
Your reflection hits the water and your dreams come tumbling out from every corner.
And you wanna feel free, to flap around, and feel the heart beat, and you wanna swim out there, breath in, breath out.
